WPMutliSite is not a plugin. This application stands beside your WordPress installation. Because WPMutliSite is capable for managing hundreds of sites and many multi site installations it cannot operate as a plugin. It can be installed in a subdirectory of an existing domain or in the root directory of unique domain or subdomain. For example you use the standard installation configuration where you would install WPMultiSite in the root directory of your existing WordPress installation. The process creates a directory named wpms and the application runs from that directory. wpms-config-sample.php is installed in the base directory of your installation. This file is used in one of the following steps in the installation process.
Before You Install
You need to read the Before you Install WPMultiSite document before install WPMultiSite. There are some limitations.
Basic Installation Steps
Installing this application will be very easy if you’ve installed applications or scripts before. Basically we’re going to obtain the files, prepare the server for the installation which includes setting up the database and then upload the files to the server. Then once the application is on the serverwe’ll lead you through the configuration and initialization steps.
Warning: Backup all your WordPress files BEFORE you begin the installation process.
Unzip Files Locally
Unzip the downloaded zip file on your local system. This will create asource directory (a directory named source).
Upload Files to Your Server
Upload the files in the source directory of your local system to the root directory of your master WordPress installation (including folders). This will create a wpms directory.
Setup Database
Setup database. Create a database at your website to use for WPMultiSite. Record the database information for later use (host (usually localhost), user name, password and database name).
Run the WPMultiSite Installer
Run the installer by entering the URL of the setup file:
http://www.yoursite.com/wpms/wpms-install.php
(change yoursite.com to your site name)
Follow the instructions provided during the installation process.
Optional Steps
There are few optional steps that you can follow at the time or installation or any time later.
Protect Directory
For added security you can protect the wpms directory. Use your hosting control panel to protect the wpms installation directory.
